Fischer's victory over the Soviet champion Boris Spassky to win the undisputed world championship in the "Match of the Century" was seen as a symbolic victory for the West that catalyzed interest in the game internationally. His opponent (Boris Spassky - see the CPOTD from two days ago) was portrayed, in the United States in particular, as the product of an impersonal, mechanical, and oppressive system of state control, while Fischer was the solitary genius overcoming the Soviets' claim to dominance. As he was a national hero, Americans were willing to forgive his behavior and views as eccentricities, and in popular culture he became a symbol of the genius whose brilliance is so great that he is destroyed by it.

Amazing..what is he up to now? Still around? Notice in the pic of him in his later years that he is on an airplane...

Yeah, he's still around and playing. He pops up regularly at the New York City chess club in Manhattan and pops up in different clubs, mainly in the US, on a surprise and sometimes incognito basis. He's also a playing member at the ICC internet chess club I belong to, where he plays under an alias. I've played him twice and I've never been so badly whupped in my life. lol One game, he had me in serious trouble from move No. 5, and it all went downhill from there. Still, there's something about the guy's playing: it's exciting to play him, y'know? He's not a grinder, that's for sure!

I bet the more you play from someone better than you, the more you learn and the faster you learn :)

True that. And when you play a genius like Fischer, when you see how he goes about tearing up your whole postion...you get a glimpse, a flash of understanding of how he looks at the same board of pieces you've been staring at. You see his style, his approach, a completely new and different way of playing the game. It's like you've been playing with a harpsichord and all of a sudden this guy comes along and starts playing on an electric synthesizer. It's a trip, Man, really! hahahah

I think it's just that some call a Rook a Castle.

LOL, oh ok.

I don't see how the rook on c1 is going to achieve the mate in 2 though as the bishop on d7 covers square c8

Ding! Ding! We have another winner!

Well done, Ingleside!

Give the man his "Lucky 13" Cupie doll!

Our CPOTD is a rather rare find. It's not easy to be a professional chessplayer in Iran, especially if you happen to be a woman. Chess had been forbidden in Iran for a long time, but in the last 5 years, it's blossomed again.

Our Chess Player of the Day is Shirin Shawabi, FIDE rated at 2230 and she is the three time Iran Womens Chess Champion.

This afternoon's chess problem is an easy one. It's called "Doubles Match" because you've got even teams attacking and defending that pawn in front of the Black King.

White to Move and Mate in three.

Enjoy!

I gotta tell you, there's something about that jihab (the head scarf) that I find pretty sexy. I'm developing Muslim tastes with exposure to it, I guess. lol

You might want to take Robert Brooke on in a chess game. He's high on his victory and is looking for another match. :-)

That's maybe a thought since I had been "skulking" on that thread here and there just to see how things progressed.

My "dial-up" enabled bandwidth kinda ticks me off as some of the graphics are sloooooowwwww to load. (the here and there part)

But anyway, good show Robert!

Is there a way to slightly reduce the size of the board, or are "old tired eyes" in control here? ;)
