Can I move the whole BOINC folder at another PC to finish work there ? I mean will this be a problem for the boinc server because the stats there "remember" which WU to which PC is ? Thank you in advance |

Can I move the whole BOINC folder at another PC to finish work there ? This is a good question because of what I just did, I was running Win 2k from drive D and had a problem so I installed Win XP Pro on drive C (New install not an upgrade) and I named the computer the same as before much to my surprise after finding the files on the D drive Boinc manager started up and all my history and work units were still there. This computer has also just gone through a new main-board, processor and ram. So I wonder if it would work if the new computer had the same name, and user name as the old one? I also had a partially completed W/U that picked up where it left off. |

AFAIK it doesn't matter what the computer is named or which hardware it has. It doesn#t even matter in which folder BOINC resides. What does matter are the client's ID which is saved in one (ore more) of the .XML files in the BOINC directory. So the answer to the original question should be. Yes, that's possible. It's not possible (at least not easily) to move only single workunits but as long as mou move the whole folder all should be well. I'm regularly movin my whole BOINC folder from a PC without working network to another PC with working network without any problems. [edit]Tpyos[/edit] |

I have had BOINC with three projects running installed on a computer that was multi-boot, Win2000, winXP pro and Win2003 server. BOINC was installed in one folder and installed on all OS's with no problems. The Hard drive with BOINC and WinXP Pro was then moved to new machine, completely new cpu/mobo/etc, did Win XP repair install and BOINC ran with no problems and no loss of units. |

Thank you to everyone who post comments about that. In fact this really works. I tested it 2 hours ago. I moved the whole BOINC folder to another PC, then I installed again the distribution over that folder, and then I ran the BOINC without any loss of data or units. After one of the units completed it was uploaded successfully. |
