... As for the prevalance of viri... The people concerned will tend to write for the platform that has the potential to cause the most damage and spread the furthest, e.g the most common... Windows is still the most common OS running on many more boxes than Linux, so Windows will naturally be the most obvious target for virus/hacker attempts. Not necessarily. Much of it depends on what the creator of the virus hopes to gain - do they want a back door for creating a spambot or do they want fame. My guess is that the majority just want to make their name well known within the hacking community and be considered by that community as the best. If someone could write a virus that could reek major havoc on a linux system, look at the attention they could get from it. Not only would they get the glory of proving the naysayers wrong, but they could shut down some of the most significant web sites in the world. If a hacker could shut down yahoo, for instance, think of the immediate world-wide attention they would get -- far greater than they could ever get from a lifetime of releasing typical windows virii. |

(...) there are very few commercial organisations that develop in parallel for both Windows and Linux boxes... Take Halo for example (...) "Microsoft has announced that the PC version of Halo 2 will only work on the new version of Windows called Vista." Halo 2 gamers face Vista upgrade ... |

Imma cheap bastage. I havn't paid a dime. I'm talking about linux. Only thing it has cost me is the CD's to burn the ISO's to. Again, I havn't paid a dime. |

Something interesting came up on Team Starfire. A Non Seti member had a problem with "setiathome_4.18_windows_intelx86.exe" running in the background and couldn't get rid of it. After doing a lot of searching we found that it was hidden in his system32 folder and the exe was renamed to "wupdmgr1.exe" Someone went to a lot of trouble to hide everything. We found out the user that is getting the credits and his stats are very interesting. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=122736 A one user team and ranked 10th in the world. What do you think? i had it in mine to |

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=122736 A one user team and ranked 10th in the world. At BOINCstats, a query on Team Nº122736 yields “Team ID doesn't exist in SETI@Home or doesn't have any credit.†|

Ignore my previous erroneous post. What I mean to ask is - - If I find an application named wupdmgr on my pc, should I delete it ?? A search of my C drive found it in two folders: C:\\i386, and C:\\windows\\system32. Also found the following page, http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/wupdmgr/ offering to scan my pc for such problems, but DIDN'T use yet. Any comments ? Thanks ! |

Ignore my previous erroneous post. wupdmgr.exe is a valid executable and is a necessary part of the Windows Update. wupdmgr1.exe is not and should be deleted. |

Ignore my previous erroneous post. I searched, and do not have wupdmgr1 on my pc. I will leave wupdmgr as is. Thank you, Al. |
