Starting a new thread, since that thread is so long.

What is happening on your system? What kind of issues do you see? Can you give us the last 20 or so messages from the message tab, so we can try and help?

Message 220137 - Posted: 23 Dec 2005, 3:27:34 UTC

OK, I'm a BOINC newbie and am naive about the process. I don't care very much about credits, competition, etc. However, I've always kept my comuter running 24/7 doing SETI@Home. Since switching to BOINC a few days ago, my computer has been idle- hardly doing anything for 2 days.

So why should I bother to keep to running? Can somebody gove me an explanation why my status has read "won't accept new work for 2 days? I want it to be productive, participate, make my little contribution, etc. I've been diliigent and dedicated for about 6 years. But my initial experience with BOINC has not been posiitive. Not yet, anyway.

I will hang in there as long as there is hope of things getting going. Maybe I should try the Climate Predictor to take up this slack time?

Steve

Steve, your cpu last communicated with Seti about 21 hours ago and you have not downloaded anything to crunch. Since you don't have anything in a cache, try a "project reset". It may help also to have some descriptions from the message tab as to why it isn't working.

I see no change as yet.

I don't think I'm stupid, but I am ignorant about the workings of BOINC. Gonna take a while to get up to speed, I guess. Kinda like when I taught myself DOS, W98,WXP, Word, Quark, Illustrator, PhotoShop, etc. Very frustrating in the beginning stages.

Now that I think of it, the original SETI was down for as long as a week at a time.

I'll try to be patient.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

You are not requesting work. Are you doing more than one project? If you are, it might think you are over commited.

If you are not, under the Project Tab does the button say Suspend or Resume? If it says Resume, click it, because those buttons say what they will do if you click it.

Have you changed General Settings for hard drive/memory usage?

What other changes might have you made in the last couple of days?

That's a clue, that BOINC doesn't think you need any SETI work right now.

If you look on the Projects tab, is there anything in the Status column? In the left side of the tab, does the second button say "Suspend"? If you go to the menu bar and click on Command, in the top section which option is selected?

MJ:
Projects status says "Won't Get New Work."

Second button says "Suspend."

Third button says "Allow new work."

Command tab set to "Run Always" and "Network activity always available."
What now?

Third button says "Allow new work."

BINGO!
Click that button, and it'll allow new work again. 8-)

OK, did that. Now the status button says "Communication deferred," and it's counting down. Now at 00:07:16.

Shall I wait till it finishes the countdown or hit "Update?" We're into instant gratification.

Thanks for your help and patience, y'all.

It's already communicated with the server, and started downloading a result which you should see on the work tab. That deferral is just so that you don't pound on the update button and try to flood the server.

Shall I wait till it finishes the countdown or hit "Update?" We're into instant gratification.

Don't look at the Project tab now, go to the Work tab and see the CPU time and progress %age increasing. You should be on your way now. 8-)

Congrats to be back to crunching. Knew it had to be a simple fix.

Yes, playing with those buttons on the side can be fun, but remember they tell you what they will do, not what they are doing. So you want them to actually sound kind of negative.

Pooh Bear:

Thanks for your help.

Since the corrections were made, the box processed 4 WUs, is 60% done its fifth and there's one ready to run.

Merry Christmas.
Thanks again.
