Message 204520 - Posted: 6 Dec 2005, 9:19:36 UTC

I ran into the ubiquitous "Can't connect to localhost" earlier today on one of my rigs. I shut the computer off for a few hours to do some maintenance and the problem popped up when I rebooted. I added no new software nor did I make any firewall changes. All was fine before the shut down.

I looked at all of the forum threads back to June, tried all the suggestions for hours and hours and found no joy.

The trouble is, I have a dozen or so completed units backed up in a file and ready to transmit and I can't get BOINC mgr or the daemon (whichever) to see them.

I've tried placing the projects folder in the BOINC folder before and after the program starts. I've installed fresh and placed the projects folder in there before attaching to a project, too.

All of that probably doesn't matter since I think the client_state file is the one that connects the dots for me, right? BUT copying that and/or my account_setiathome.berkeley.edu just makes the problem pop up again.

stderrdae file shows this:
SymGetLineFromAddr(): GetLastError = 126

Am I out of luck or is there a solution? I'd hate to waste a day or more of results.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Yeah, I read tons of threads - no apparent cause or solution that works for everyone.

The trick is not the "can't connect to localhost" issue, but can I recover the completed wu's that were sitting there waiting to be uploaded due to the issues in CA.

My question doesn't revolve around the server issues - I'm cool with that.

It's that I had a bunch of completed wu's waiting to upload before my troubles. Ever since I had to reinstall BOINC, I can't copy over my old client_state file without running into the "can't connect to localhost" problem again. I have a backed up "projects" folder with the completed wu's in them, but no way I can see to get my fresh install to look at them.

Stinks...

There is a minor issue with the timing of the start of the two applications. If the BOINC Manager gets up before the BOINC Daemon is started it will fail like this.

Use the file menu to connect. If it will not connect, your daemon may not have started up for one reason or another.

This is one of the problems that is being currently addressed by the 5.2.14 and posibly later ...

I am sure Tony can point us to a more complete thread about this ...

Morning, actually I read this thread earlier but was unsure about what he's really done. I hadn't had coffee yet and was not of a mindset to approach this yet. Now I've answered all the unanswered help desk quesions and am ready to address this now.

You say you created a back up? good.

I see you're a windows user, and if you click here boinc 5.2.14 will download immediately, It was written in an effort to fix this issue. It's still considered developemental, but your help could make it the recommended version.

Exit Boinc

then install this right on over the old version, no need to uninstall.

does this fix your issue?

Installed in a third backup folder and then in desperation in the original backup and I'm sorry to say that it didn't fix things. In fact, the BOINC manager 5.2.13 that I got working this morning disappeared even though it was in a much different directory (though in the same partition). Huh...

Now, as I said, I was able to get up and running again (at about 3AM) by making a fresh installation. This is actually what precipitated my question. With that new install, BOINC wouldn't see the wu's that were awaiting upload before the problem arose. I have a backup projects folder with about 12 completed wu's ready to upload that would be a shame to lose.

New development that may give a clue - after about three hours' sleep I woke to find that, with my clean install and fresh wu's downloaded, I see a completed wu with a completion time of 38 hours! I went to bed with 1 downloaded unit so that time is way off. In fact, BOINC mgr has set that as the estimated time for the other new units that downloaded overnight.

yikes!

It is entirely possible that the results in question were uploaded by the daemon without the help of the Manager. The daemon is perfectly capable of downloading, directing crunching, uploading and reporting all on its own. Have you checked the status of the results in question on the web?

Yes, I have, John. They're not there. I have copied them over to my fresh projects folder from my backup, but they do not show up on my work tab either. Good thought though.

Any ideas on the 48 hour wu that took 3 hours to create? Two puzzlers at once.

Thanks!

To get the results to register on your host, you also have to get them entered into the client_state.xml file. If you did a backup of this file as well and hove no work in progress, you can copy it from the backup. Creating the entries out of whole cloth is a major bit of surgery on the file.

Ahhh! I had just copied over the whole client_state file and thus got my problem again. I take to mean that I should copy the work unit data only? Such as:

<file_info>
<name>13au01aa.6597.690.1009650.173</name>
<nbytes>372522.000000</nbytes>
<max_nbytes>0.000000</max_nbytes>

<url>http://setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/21f/13au01aa.6597.690.1009650.173</url>
</file_info>

This makes a lot of sense. I am out of my element digging into this stuff on my own. The only code I know is the one I get in my doze in the winter.

Thanks one and all for the sage advice!! I'll report my undoubted success as soon as I can.

Jim
