Unless I'm missing something (which is entirely possible), there hasn't been a science newsletter or any other sort of progress report since July. Are you guys doing anything with all this data we're crunching? If so, could you take a few minutes to throw us a bone to let us know what you're doing with all the results?

According to Matt Lebofsky:

in Science Newsletters
We know it's ugly. We have a "current status" page in the works (waiting on one guy to fill in a few holes in the text). And hopefully more science newsletters following that.

Edit: I just cleaned up that page and added several Planetary Society science newletters which brings everything a bit more up-to-date.

in Have we found anything since the project started?
SETI as a science has been going on for decades, and so far nothing has been found yet. Of course, as time goes on the ability to look for more types of signals in more parts of the sky improves, and more telescopes/academic institutions are added to the mix.

Our group has been very busy ramping down one SETI project (SETI@home "classic") while ramping up another (SETI@home "enhanced" which uses a whole new networking platform called BOINC). As well we have other SETI projects that do not require volunteer computing (Optical SETI - looking for light pulses, and SERENDIP - another radio frequency search that scans more frequencies than SETI@home but not nearly as "deep").

We are also working on a better signal processing backend that will process the SETI@home signals as they come in, so our web site would be continually updated with the "current most interesting candidate signals," etc. Of course, nothing is all that interesting until we go back to the observatory, scan those coordinates again, and see the exact same signals.

Sometimes I think we are alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we are not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

I imagine this is caused by your BOINC client being out of work units to crunch, due to the server problems recently you may not have been able to download any new Seti work to crunch, hence "BOINC is currently idle". It might be an idea to consider attaching to some of the other projects that are currently available whilst you are waiting for Seti's servers to give you some more work.

Of course, I could be wrong here.

I'm having a similar problem with BOINC and the SETI@home project.

I've got BOINC installed on two machines, my Windows XP SP2 box and a 2000 Advance Server box. The 2000 box is working fine. It gets new units every time it needs them. The XP box has been showing "BOINC is currently idle" since 12/02/05.

I've checked my settings and am attached to the SETI project.

What's the deal? :(

Well i'm crunching the numbers here, and I'm getting new projects, but SETI isn't accepting my finished work lately
