I've got one last little question before I dive into bed: Does the Win98 box have an active internet connection and is that one on and active?

Yes - via JAP (on the Windows box - which is running) and my Linux firewall - *but* I'm not getting that far with BOINC.

Well, it's now taken to starting - minimised - on logon even when I've unchecked the option using the startup tab in msconfig.

I do now have it minimised, with both boincmgr and boinc visible in "Close programs".

...and, for the first time, I have access to the tabs and menus in the program. We have a "disconnected" message showing in the bottom right hand corner, but nothing on the messages tab.

Wait two more minutes, then pick "file" "select computer", leave boxes empty, click OK

it should try to attach to boinc.exe. and then it should say connected localhost

Currently showing "Connecting to localhost" (bottom RH corner); it has been for over a minute, and it is again showing as "not responding" in Close Programs.

Check the close program box for more instances than just ONE boinc and ONE boincmgr.

If you point the cursor at the B in the task bar, right click, can you "disable network access?

(I assume you mean the system tray). No - I can't even bring up the context menu.

Correct - nor any of the menus (in BOINC manager).

dang, I think I know where this is headed, I've seen this.

Close both programs by close programs. force them off.

then reboot. When it comes back up in a minimized fashion, use the B in the systray and try to disable network access, then "run boinc".

I think it will connect to local host, and the tabs will work.

I'll be waiting.

I am now however getting a tooltip from the B in systray - "BOINC Manager - BOINC Manager is not currently connected to a B" - the last being apparently truncated by the edge of the screen. The tip is behaving properly - that is, it appears when I hover the mouse cursor over the B, and disappears when I move the mouse away.
