I had a question. I currently run Seti, dropping Einstein, and looking to attach to another project to keep 1 of my computers happy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Time doesn't matter to me about WU size, I just like to get opinions about the different projects, why you like them, don't like them, would you recommend them.

Thanks to all who respond.

If you like the field of Physics you can go with LHC@home, which has about the same size of work units as SETI dose, although some W/Us are shorter than S@H.

Next month you may want to enroll in Orbit@home, which is another Astro Physics Project, similar to Einstein@Home in some regards.

Personally, I'll stay with 25% SETI, 25% Einstein, 25% LHC and the remaining 25% for Orbit when it comes along, mostly because I like Physics as it relates to Outer Space Exploration.

Regards,
Tom

You also may want to consider the Climate Prediction project (long term global climate modellng) - http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/index.php. Units have a 1 year deadline. I keep mine running at a fairly low priority and it helps when the others projects are staggering along

Orbit is(linux only, so far)searching for Asteroids which might impact earth. I think having years to find a solution to diverting the "Big one" is a worth while endeavor. I had a fight with Cancer and therefor prefer projects like Protein predictor at home. PPAH WUs are short and in my "objective" ,LOL, opinion also worth while.

Jeremy,

This is one of those personal preference questions. :)

So, it is hard to make good suggestions. I tend to have mostly pretty fast computers as I buy at, or just below the leading edge of capablitiy most of the time. So, with that in mind, I can do a wide variety of work with little problmes.

The "best" news is that we have a very good selection of projects at this time to choose from. I just "upped" my participation with adding two of the "newer" projects to my "list". And here is the fun part for me. With SZTAKI having problems right now ... I just suspended it from getting work. When the web site and the project get back to "normal" operation ... well ... at that point I will start them back up.

Though I don't really have much interest in biology projects, unlike Tony, I doubt any of the work they are doing is going to help *MY* medical problem ... :)

I just seem to have a odd interest in Rosetta@Home ... I am not dropping Predictor@Home, but I am lowering my participation ... but who knows, I may really decide to play with resource shares so I can "balance" my world rank numbers ... :)

The point is, what do YOU want to do ... that is why I have been so facinated with BOINC and its potential ... unlike the early projects, server outages? Who cares, I have 8 projects, the chance of all 8 running out of work? really low ... when Orbit@Home goes live I plan to add them ... why not? An interesting project, so is PlanetQuest ... :)

We have a couple guides in the Wiki on selecing projects and adjusting resource shares ... but, you have to decide what your goals are and what you are interested in doing ... I like the science, the community, and the sheer joy of still being able to give something back to the world ...

Thanks to all who respond.

You are welcome ...

As BOINC develops we are getting more and more projects to choose from.

As I have limited computer resources I am unable to add every project (which ideally I would like to do), so I have to pick and choose the ones that fit my preferences.

When Orbit@Home is developed for Windows that will be the last one I add to my list (unless of course something comes along that really piques my interest).

See my sig for a list of the ones I'm currently doing (or have done in the past).

Try Distributed Computing for a good list of projects.

With the latest builds, you can add however many projects you wish. Just don't expect to work on all of them at the same time. I tend to collect projects, and I have attached to more than 20.

Thanks kinhull! I needed a project to substitute Einstein with, as I detached myself from there, so I went to the site you linked to, and it gives a really good overview of the different projects! :-)

So I joined Rosetta@Home and am right now crunching my first WU from there! :-D

Hi Fuzzy,

Glad to have been of service..

I'm here to help, in my own small way.

Sorry to say, "LHC@home" just ran out of work!

    Server Status

    Up, out of work
    43001 workunits in progress
    43 concurrent connections

Thank you for that link. I as well, just like Fuzzy, joined Rosetta, crunching my first WU there. Finishing up 2 Einstein that I had left over, then dropping them, so will be running Seti, Seti Enhanced, and Rosetta on this machine, and just Seti on the other.

Thank you to all who responded as well. I just like to crunch, don't really have any particular reason to join one or the other for any specific reasons, I just like to do work. Eventually I will add more as I read up on the other projects, and who knows, I may just turn my computer into one like Matt, and have 20 projects. :-) Thanks again all.

Rosetta@Home has one lingering problem which can kill a work unit. David Kim is looking hard, but we have no news yet.

Best option there is to leave in memory ...

Like you, I just like to keep busy, and I like to contribute to a number of projects. Though, at some point I am going to have to start to "ration" myself somehow. But, running 5+ projects seems to suit me where I can keep them humming. :)

Heck, with LHC@Home abruptly running out of work, my one Sulfur Cycle that was in peril is now out of danger ... of course, if they come back with work quickly I may get back into do-do again ... for all of that, I have on SCyc at 37% and the other at 12% ... won't be done till january ... :(

Ah well, at least I have CPDN running on the PowerMac again ...

Now, if I could only afford two new computers ...
