Hi All BOINC'ers Maybe this has been done b4, but how many of you are you computing data under linux for SETI@home ? I have 2 computers at the moment computing data for SETI@home, till i get my server backup online (HDD Failed) will then have 3 again. Linux Rocks Cheers Quail |

Hi All BOINC'ers I have a total of 4 PCs here, two are running Linux (Suse 9.3, my 'main' computer, and Debian, my 'Server'). The other two are laptops running Winblows. One of them runs only CPDN because of an error in the LAN-connection... Greetings from Germany |

Hello all, I have 2 xp, 3 xp-pro,1 win 98, and 3 fedora boxes all running boinc, What I like most about fedora was the price-free, It allowed me to set up 3 addional crunchers. Keep on crunchin every one. |

Hi All BOINC'ers > > I am new to linux but have 1 Computer running SimplyMepis 3.3.1 which is real simple Linux OS. Still Zip files have to be gunzipped and once seti@home folder is created I have to CD to the folder and ./boinc_4.19* every time I start client. Client has to run in terminal console so for me it is still a chore. I wish it were more automated. Once started it always runs I have never seen an error running seti@home on this linux OS and is very stable. ![]() |

I like Fedora Core 3 and 4, but since the optimized clients are so much faster for windows, and services are easy to setup there, I use XP for my crunchers. |

I'm dual booting for now, until I get a new PC in september. My dual boot conf is WinXP Pro / Mandrake 10.1 I just install Linux yesterday and start to crunch today. I'll keep running for a few days to see how it goes with the penguin... I didn't run a Linux box for about 2 years now. |

Currently 6 Gentoo GNU/Linux machines here. One dual boots Windows XP but I very rarely use that - especially as, for me, Linux crunches SETI much faster. Optimised clients all round. Be lucky Neil ![]() |

Hmm... I've got Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Darwin 8, & Yellow Dog 4.0.1 on one machine (It'd be FC4/PPC or Kubuntu if it weren't for massive video problems); Mac OS 7.6.1, BeOS 5.0.3, & Yellow Dog 3.0.1 on another; System 6.0.8, A/UX 3.0.1, & Debian/68k on yet another; and Win2K & Damn Small Linux on VirtualPC. But, yeah - Linux all the way. :-) |

I like Fedora Core 3 and 4, but since the optimized clients are so much faster for windows, and services are easy to setup there, I use XP for my crunchers. Mmmm... that's not what I'm seeing on my dual boot systems. My AMD Athlon XP systems are all about 15-20 mins faster using Linux than Windows (optimized clients on both). Metod's data shows an Intel P4 system to be virtually identical under linux or windows. Services are extremely easy to setup under linux (FC) IMHO. Menu > System Settings > Services with an on/off tickbox for each service. What could be easier? I have 3 Linux boxes crunching BOINC atm, and had about 6 SGi IRIX dual processor servers crunching on old seti classic before I switched. Here is my setup... 5x Fedora Core 3+4 4x OsX 10.3.9 + 10.4.2 2x Win XP 3x Win 2k Fastest Crunchers are with no doubt the Linux boxes with optimized clients. The difference between the optimized Win clients and the optimized Linux clients is small, but Linux is still a few minutes faster. Chris Bosshard Visit my homepage astroinfo SETI page |

1 x FC3 4 x WinXP Right now my FC3 box is off line due to heat problems. Have a new 80mm fan on order for it. Soon will be back on line and slowly crunching. It is a sad sad day when someone takes your spoon away from you... |

WOW It is surprising the amout of people there is running Linux (unix) to run BOINC. I don't run any optermized BOINC or SETI@home clients under Linux, cause I have tryed to compile my own but it has stuffed up on me :-( Rgds PS in the immortal words of Albert Einstein "The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them" Cheers Quail |
