i have since installed slackware 10.2 and it wiorks fine, especially wirth xfce at the window manager instead of KDE

the eople there are usially very helpfull though i suggets searching the forum for you quetsion forst and only posting if there isnt an answer that solves your problem.

vert rarely are you told to RTFM or STFW though the less severe "google is your freind" somtimes crops up.

I directed my question to suselinuxsupport.de two days ago but no responses. I'll try linuxquestions.org but based on past experience there I don't expect much in the way of response or assistance.

so like i was out and about today and thought what the heck since i haven't had any blank cds for a while and have a dvd burner i haven't used yet i'll check out the price of blank dvd-r disks well i found a good deal so i bought some and after i got home i decided to try one out since i was curious how the burner would do so i started k3b and it asked for the cd recording speeds of my cd burner and dvd burner so i'm like ok and set the speeds but when i got ready to record the dvd the max speed was only 14x and i'm like no way so i look around and find the dvd burner info and it's wrong so i tell the program to recheck the dvd burner's info again and the cd recording speed of the dvd burner i bought under the impression it was a 48x burner well at least that's what the seller and sony say it is but k3b says the max speed is 128x i don't see how it's possible 'cause the fastest recording speed i see on cds is 48x so i'm like ok well it doesn't matter i'm burning a dvd anyway so i let k3b decide how fast to burn and set up the disk to burn the intel compilers and libs and stuff to clear a little disk space so then i've got 1gb of stuff to put on the disk and i start the burn process and i'm like no way this is fast three minutes to burn 1gb and i'm like no freakin way this is unreal!

OK, SuSE 10.0 is up and running. It seems the problem was related to installing from my Sony DWQ-30A DVD burner. I installed using my Toshiba 32x scsi cd-rom extremely quickly and with no problems. Well, almost no problems. I can't boot windows (98se and 2k are also installed on this computer). It seems there's a problem with grub.

With the hardware changes it looks like the average work unit time has decreased from just over six hours to around four and a half hours.

Check /boot/grub/menu.lst and make sure you have those windows entries.

Well, today I decided to tackle the installation of an AMI megaraid 493 and drives and the SUSE 10.1 upgrade. Oh, what a pain in the...

To start with, no matter what I did I couldn't get it to do a RAID 10 array. I had to settle for RAID 5 and accept the associated lower performance. Then I rearrange the boot order to allow boot from the atapi cd (sony dvd burner) and start the upgrade process. No sign of the new array. OK, so I'll do it as a new install. No sign of the new array. I step backwards and in the process wind up with an error message from the installer and lose the graphical interface. Now in text mode I check the loaded modules. The megaraid module's active. What the... why isn't the array shown?

After several tries I decided to give up on the 10.1 dvd and see what happens with the 10.0 cds. So back to the bios to rearrange the boot order again (back to what it was originally). Now from the scsi CD I run the 10.0 installer. Now the array's displayed, but due to package conflicts from newer app versions I installed with synaptic the simplest solution is to delete everything and do a new install. At least it was quick (about 1.5 hours).

Well, now I'm running a fresh, up to date SUSE 10.0 and both my 3ware ata raid 10 and AMI scsi raid 5 array have lots of space. It looks like I'll have to wait for the final version of 10.1 before I'll (finally!!!) be able to use my All-in-wonder's tv tuner. Looks like tomorrow I'll install the intel compiler and libs.

As far as I can tell everything is correct.
I've gotten to the point using linux that it's hardly worth messing with windows anymore (although I do miss The Sims).

I believe I dropped about 1000 seconds on average when I went from windows to linuxwith my SuSE 10. 5500 average seconds pr WU to 4500 per WU...using the optimized setiathome from Naparst.

My biggest trouble today is finding work for it...keep getting "No work from Project"...

Yesterday evening my computer decided to give itself a hemispherectomy. The motherboard refuses to dependably recognize or utilize processors in the CPU0 slot. I've tried four different processors in the slot with the same result. Boot failures, freezes during boot, and random lockups. It's running for now in failsafe mode with one processor (CPU1 slot). Time for another motherboard.

I've settled on a Tyan Thunder 2500. I'd appreciate it if anyone who has used this model motherboard would post their experiences with it.

One of these days I'll be able to afford a speedy new multi-GHz system but for now I have to make do with P3s.

Does the computer still have 64 MB of SDRAM? If so it might be a good idea to add some memory.

There are 5 - 2 CD pack's ( I guesss for distribution - they all "look" the same) one with 'live' to preview the app and the other an install CD. I just wanted to make sure thet were all th same B4 jumping in with both feet. (I'll run 'live' first to see how it feels)

Anyone here have any experience with Ubuntu? I'm over in their threads right now but the Rip Van Winkle effect of dial up ensures that I'll be searching for awhile! :)

Note: I decided on Ubuntu because it had a familiar looking GUI and "Lindows" is not free (nor does it really seem like true Linux).

If somebody doesn't mind, can they briefly explain why linux is better (and gaining popularity like crazy)? I really just use my computer for surfing, school, and games....Compatibilty (with the games) is one of my concerns. I really have no idea what Linux is like and who should use it. I'd appreciate any responses!

Then I would be correct in using a distro based on the Gnome environment first and then after getting comfortable, moving to a KDE? Again, as a *noob* I don't care so much 'what' as I do in just 'how'.

yeah my default on SuSE is KDE. Although, SuSE comes with most desktops bundled.
