I'm trying to get Bionic up so I can continue churning for SETI but when I try to align with a project, it asks me for a proxy server. I don't think I have a proxy server, or perhaps I just don't know what it is, or what all those blanks are supposed to be filled with. It took me over ten minutes just to figure out how to ask for help. Your Bionic isn't very friendly towards someone that isn't very user savy. |

The proxy dialog comes up if there is too long a delay in connecting to the project servers. As there are a lot of new users setting up their accounts, there's been a bit of a traffic jam since the shut-down notice went out. Two easy things I've seen recommended are to reboot after installing but before connecting, and have patience. MJ ![]() |

I've tried at many different times of the day and night with no luck whatsoever. Either I get a failed to attach" error message or the above proxy server dialogue. So my contribution may just go bye-bye as well. |

Of course, SETI-BOINC has had over 10,000 new users and 13,000 new hosts become active in the last 3 days, so there's been a lot of traffic on the servers. People are getting through, but it still seems to be the luck of the draw as to who and when. Sorry you haven't had the luck, it will happen if you give it time. MJ ![]() |

Did anyone so much as consider doing a gradual changeover by forcing people to change over to the new software in groups, rather than setting a drop dead date and trying to get everyone to come over at the same time at the last minute? Sheesh. Been trying for an hour to attach and it doesn't even budge. |

Sheesh. Been trying for an hour to attach and it doesn't even budge. Strangely enough they didn't think many would listen to the email, and hang on till the end. They have enough capacity to handle it once everyone is attached, but this mad rush was in my estimate unexpected. The have plans in the work to reduce the load by 75% before classic closes. We people behind the Help desk don't work for berkeley, were users like you who care enough to volunteer to try and help when they can. some answer a question and leave, some spend hours, I've been here since 5 this morning, and it's now 9:17 PM where I am |

Sheesh. Been trying for an hour to attach and it doesn't even budge. Been there, done that, and I appreciate your volunteering. This isn't about the help desk, though, it's about the planning. No one listens to the emails, but as you can see they do listen to warning dialogs from the program, because they can't be ignored. Oh, heck, it's too late anyway. I'm not even going to try to attach until I get back from vacation in Oz in January... |

I get back from vacation in Oz in January... Have you tried what I've been suggesting all day? Only one came back and said it didn't work? If you're getting a proxy box, you might wanna search the latest threads and try it. |

************************************** Seti@Home Users Afer some irritation with the new BOINC program, I simply followed the instructions of some helpful users here and the advice of a help desk individual...and I'm connected to my project. My problem was the program continuously "required" proxy server information, which I do not connect through any type servers. So - as these people suggested - I reboot my computer and low and behold I immediately connected with the email address I registered with Seti@Home and the password of my account and I'm in. I think a large part of the ongoing problem with BOINC is the format of their help, at this Web site. It is very confusing and the navigation of it is not helpful. Every link takes you to another (off-route) place. When users see a link, they feel they are supposed to take it (in a help area). In the "manual" that BOINC provides, there are links all over the damn place, and so you end up going... well, all over the damn place...just to have one simple question answered. Anyway, hang in there, people. We shouldn't let a program implementation get in the way of our cause. *********************************************** |

I want to use setiathomebonic as my screen saver and when I'm not on line You can. Disconnect from the internet and BOINC will still run. If you have Windows set up to go into a screen saver, and if it is set to BOINC already, then the screen saver will kick in - even if you're not online. |

This BOINC for me is "user antagonistic" I have no proxy it just comes back with same window ATTACH TO PROJECT after I fill it in and hit NEXT, good luck to all... nextreal This suggestion has helped at least one user, perhaps it can help here: I would reccommend in your case to unistall BOINC totally and then check where BOINC lives at the moment and clear out any remaining files after the uninstall, then try to install 5.2.11, after installed open BOINC and try the attach to project option make sure you DON'T go to the Account manager button, enter the URL of the project and your password (Thanks to Halifax--lad for that) MJ ![]() |

Usually its no big problem using Boinc. - DL the Boinc software. - Install the Boinc software. - Reboot your computer (even dough the application doesn't tell you so). - Start Boinc (if it isn't already started at startup). - Select Projects - Attach to project in the menu. - Do what you're told to there. - Chrunch workunits! This simple step-by-step guide should be easy enough for the most of the new members of Boinc/Seti. At least thats what I have to do when I need to install this to a new computer, Welcome to Boinc! Greetings from Norway. Crunching is fun! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

That url would be nice if it worked. This is my first time setting up this crappy program that won't even accept its own information. Perhaps instead of telling people that they did something wrong and that we need to start all over again and again and agian you should provide a program that works!! This is a sad day, get your head out of your butt and fix the problem! |

Seti@Home Users: If you follow these broadly labeled steps, and let me know where your problems begin (as they surely will), I will do my best to lend a hand. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0) completely disregard the confusing "BOINC users manual" (a vital step) 1) download the BOINC software 2) install the BOINC software 3) activate your BOINC account with Seti@Home (myself, I missed this step a few times) 4) reboot your computer (even though the application does not instruct so) 5) start the BOINC program (it should start up automatically after rebooting) 6) attach BOINC to your Seti@Home project . . . . .to do this: --------6a) select "Project" from the menu at the top --------6a) enter "http://setiathome.berkeley.edu" for your project link 7) provide your Seti@Home sign-on information that the BOINC program requests . . . . .if you are not required to enter this information (above), then STOP - either: --------7a) you have not yet activated your account with BOINC (because you weren't prompted to), or --------7b) you are being asked for Proxy connection info (incorrectly) 8) follow subsequent instructions Designate where your problems begin (using the respective number from above) and I will try to assist you. My guess is either (7a) or (7b) are your issues. In any case, let me know where your problems start and I will help you through the mess as best I can. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope I can be of assistance. I was very frustrated with my initial installation of this program. I still am put out with the ill-designed, ill-equipped "BOINC users manual". It is a "BIONIC users headache", with all its superfluous links (don't take that link) and unrelated information. Since I managed to get through the confusion myself, I would like to lend a hand, if I can, to my fellow Seti@Home users. NOTE: I am merely another user - I am not help desk, nor am I affiliated with BOINC in any way other than through my humble little Seti@Home account. (So please go easy on me - I'm just trying to help.) Joseph Dougherty Los Angeles, California |

I recently downloaded and installed BOINC, but have no idea how to participate in SETI@home using BOINC. I have not been able to find any instructions on how to participate in the project. Selecting "Attach to new Project" brings up a box that requests URL and Account Key. I have my account key, but cannot find the URL to use for the SETI@home project. Anyone know where to find this URL? Go to boinc website and register ,email will then be sent to give you info Good luck |
