"I Won't Say A Thing At All"

i think about you sometimes
in the middle of the day
and wonder where the time has gone
i dream about the moments
we never thought to take
there's nothin' there to leave
so why move on?

i could have said so many things
you could have said so many things
the time has passed to my regret
what we had back then is all we'll get
i see your face in random dreams
i'll pretend it don't mean anything
the time has passed for me to call
so i won't say a thing at all

i wonder 'bout the life we missed
while i'm sitting home alone
and think about the tragedies of life
i hold on to the moments
i looked into your eyes
but the past can't be revived
'cause it's all gone

i could have said so many things
you could have said so many things
the time has passed to my regret
what we had back then is all we'll get
i see your face in random dreams
i'll pretend it don't mean anything
the time has passed for me to call
so i won't say a thing at all

This is as relevant today as it was when first written over 40 years ago..

ADRIAN MITCHELL
To Whom It May Concern
(Tell Me Lies about Vietnam)

I was run over by the truth one day.
Ever since the accident I've walked this way
So stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Heard the alarm clock screaming with pain,
Couldn't find myself so I went back to sleep again
So fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Every time I shut my eyes all I see is flames.
Made a marble phone book and I carved all the names
So coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

I smell something burning, hope it's just my brains.
They're only dropping peppermints and daisy-chains
So stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Where were you at the time of the crime?
Down by the Cenotaph drinking slime
So chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

You put your bombers in, you put your conscience out,
You take the human being and you twist it all about
So scrub my skin with women
Chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

An Answer to Adrian Mitchell from a vet

To tell you lies I would not dare as for Vietnam I WAS THERE.
I must give the devil his due
My Country called - so where were You?

I'm afraid Adrian Mitchell can't respond as he is no longer with us Poet Adrian Mitchell

As he was a pacifist his poem would speak for all the wars and conflicts that still go on, which is why I posted it. I guess you have your own thoughts on Vietnam, would be interesting to see more of your poetry :)

Saw this one of Charles Causley once in the tube:

I saw a jolly hunter
With a jolly gun
Walking in the country
In the jolly sun.

In the jolly meadow
Sat a jolly hare.
Saw the jolly hunter.
Took jolly care.

Hunter jolly eager-
Sight of jolly prey.
Forgot gun pointing
Wrong jolly way.

Jolly hunter jolly head
Over heels gone.
Jolly old safety catch
Not jolly on.

Bang went the jolly gun.
Hunter jolly dead.
Jolly hare got clean away.
Jolly good, I said.
