Message 122137 - Posted: 11 Jun 2005, 14:37:16 UTC - in response to Message 122134.

*In 1194 A.D., Richard I of England introduced the Cross of St. George, a red cross on a white ground, as the the national flag of England until James I succeeded to the throne in 1603.*.....so perhaps no is the answer as it came 140 or so years after the Normans defeated the anglo-saxon regimes?????????

Thx Tigher,
I knew that St George wasn't English but didn't know whether it was by accident or design that England was ruled by Denmark and the flags are the reverse of each other.
Looks like it's just co-incidence eh?

Question.

England was ruled by Denmark about a thousand years ago.
I think England had three Danish kings who never set foot in England.
Denmark is the oldest nation in the world.
The Dannebrog is the oldest national flag.
The English flag is the reverse of the Danish flag.
My question is….Did the Danes give England their national flag, the Cross of St George??

The Union Jack as it is called is made up of the Cross of the Three Patron Saints of United Kingdom St. George, St. Andrew and St. Patrick. Now if St. George is a Dane then I guess the Danes did help!!..

But the Flag as it looks now came into being in 1801 when the cross of St Patrick was added to it.

Hmmm this can be comlicated.......I'll try.
The Union Jack is not the flag of England. The Union Jack is the Union Flag hoisted by the British Navy but only when on the jack mast....at all other times its the Union Flag. Interestingly the US Navy uses a Union Jack when on the same mast of their navy ships but of course its the stars and stripes. As such the UK flag (which is actually a the Queen's Flag and the only persons entitled to bear it are HM herself or who she gives permission to and so far thats only the British Army) is the English flag, Scottish Flag and Irish patron saint flag. The Scottish saltire being slightly higher on the flag than St Patricks red cross - cos they are senior in terms of union. The Welsh are not represented on the flag as they have been ruled and in union with England some 600 years before the union with Scotland. If the flag is hung upside down its code for distress.....but you need good eyesight to see this tnh.

Yeh Wolf but what I was getting at was, where did the foreigner, St George get the idea for the cross?

BTW the origin of the Red Cross on the white background came to being when the Legendary St George slew a Dragon. It was the mark he left on the Dragon that he had slain in the name of God.

Do you beleive in Legends? Per the Catholic Doctrines George was either from what is now England or from what is now Syria.

No, St. George wasn't Danish! He's wellknown here though as Sankt Jørgen.

About Dannebrog, the Danish flag, we're very proud of it! We use it a lot, and foreigners coming here are often amazed to see how much we use our flag! Here it's normal to hoist up the flag on private occasions also. We hoist the flag to the masthead at happy occasions and lower it to half mast on sad occasions.

But on his breast a bloody Cross he bore
The dear remembrance of his dying Lord,
For whose sweet sake that glorious badge we wore
And dead (as living) ever he adored.

I dont know whose words....but the cross was used when beating up on Islam in the crusades. Clearly, for me at least, it represented Christianity being worn boldly on their white smock type vestments that crusader knights are normally depicted in. So...aim here Islam? or.....we fight for Christianity?

Edit: The words were this fella - Spencer : His Books called Faerie Queene (1590 and 1596). In Book 1 apparently.......not actually on my bed time reading list tbh!

Now it's funny that you should say that Fuzzy. I was just about to comment on that fact myself and you took the words out of my mouth. On my first visit to DK I commented on the same thing, the flag is everywhere and it's nice to see it on a newly painted white pole againt a background of lush green and a blue sky.
You can drive all day through Britain and not see a flag pole.

Well...remember what I said earlier. The Union Flag is the Queen's. So in theory only she can use it plus the Crown Service, the Civil Service and the Army. Not even the navy nor air force lol! Its quite restricted....but I have many Man U fans etc using it......unlawfully in theory.....but I don't think anyone cares too much. The flag should not be confused with the Royal Flag....the only one never to be flown other than where the monarch actually is and never at half mast of course - the monarch never dies!.....Phew!

Hey Fuzzy,
How can I attach or show a photo, graphic, on here.
I saw a graphic on a site that made me want to spit a while ago. You know how the Yanks like to steal things and slap their name on it? Well this foto was labelled...ONLY IN CALIFORNIA...if you could see it you would know exactly where in DK this foto was taken and you may well remember the incident because I think it was sponsored by Billet Blade.

It makes me angry when Yanks say...America Gods own Country...Robbie Burns the Baird of Scotland must spin in his grave, he penned the words to Gods ain Country before America existed. You still can't tell them that Bell didn't invent the phone and Morse didn't invent the telegraph.
Ooops, getting wound up here.

I used to be very knowledgeable but I aged!
Now where the heck did I leave my spectacles this time?
Last time I lost them, I found them in the fridge, I had taken them off to read an expiry date!

This will tickle you.
Many years ago my father misplaced his spec's. My Mum did what all good partners do, she put on her spec's to help Dad to find his.
After half an hour of turning the house over Dad saw that Mum was wearing his spec's
