Still no way to remove/resize that damn space wasting "common tasks" area on the left in 4.30 (unless I missed something).

*sigh*

I tried in Linux, but it didn't work ok for me. Two reasons.

1- I think I doesn't have the fonts used in the left bar.
2- It does not connect to the localhost.

Exactly this area of which many other have complained of in many other past threads (and IIRC devs have said they will "improve" on or atlease make optional).
Alright if you running at 1024x768 or better but on 800x600 or less its a PITA wasting a large chunk of the screen.

Following M$ lead in this respect is something I would have thought open source developers wouldnt be keen on.

And no, I've not been smoking anything, maybe you have...

FTR, the minimum resolution requirement in the US is 800×600. However, there are many users who don't know any better, and keep to 640×480.

Rule of thumb: No picture should be larger than 512×384 (Quarter SVGA) without advanced warning, like "Click here for the 1280×1024 version"...

I installed 4.30 earlier today. No problems with the install or operation of it and so far everything is running smoothly.

Just NicoTine

I am running several projects at one time
I have gone over this several times to figer out
what your complaint could be.

The majority of my projects that are hooked up
use that area in one shape our another. Yes if your
just running one project themn I see your point
But the BOINC was Created to run more that one project.
So it has to be versital for the user. I can resize the gui to show
just what i want to see.

this is probably a dumb question, but i am going to ask anyhow (covering my head)

i was thinking about going from 4.25 to 4.30

i've got wu's crunching in 5 projects right now

what is the best way to do the change? wait until they complete? will my progress be the same? (thinking if i exit out of boincmgr and copy all project files it might...) comments, suggestions?

btw, i'm running xp (if that helps any)

Just install right over the top. No need to back anything up. This is the procedure I use for every upgrade (except the initial upgrade to BOINC Manager which needs you to uninstall V4.19 first - but you don't loose the wu's either)

I'm on XP and V4.30.

Live long and crunch!

I just installed right over the top of one of my machines, all worked out fine. I then stopped my other 6 clients, copied the exe's, dll's and pdb's (although I dont know what the pdb's are) across the network to the BOINC share I have on each pc(makes for easy admin), restarted all clients everything fired into life nicely, after detecting that a new version was there and then running the benchmarks... all good so far... oh and for the record, running with BOINCView 1.0.4 beta 3 only prob I've found is the completion at times arnt adjusted for time zones ie mine are all 12 hours ahead.

Cheers

Gav

took less than 5 minutes and everything is working perfectly, assuming stats will work later, possibly after restarting later...

i'm happy :-)

Awesome, glad to hear it.... Your stats will come through in good time, mine took overnight... the program needs values so as to plot some stats and that will take time, about a day I think I've seen quoted.

Cheers

Thanks again Gav, I appreciate your help :-)

One thing I notice, i never looked before today, but i saw that with CPDN running the Task Manager shows:

hadsm3_4.12_windows_intelx86.exe
hadsm3um_4.12_windows_intelx86.exe

first one is not using the cpu but the second one is 99 (as it should be)

(just an observation)

#2, after it starts up, open it and do "select computer" "localhost"... should connect then. Someone said it was firewall holding it the initial connection but I have my doubts as it does it on one of my machines that is behind a router firewall and not running XP or other firewall.

Typing "localhost" or any other valid hostname makes no difference here - always results in "Connection failed".

The Linux boincmgr simply does not work - not surprising in this Microsoft-centric place. :(

i am not sure if this is anything...

1) upgraded from 4.25 to 4.30 yesterday afternoon
only problem (not a major one) is the stats tab not working yet
(i'll give it some time before i "worry" about it)

2) BURP had a newer file (124 i believe) that may have in the process of it crunching opened a dos prompt. (i've noticed that if i "Suspend" BURP then the prompt problem does not reappear)

3) I did change one of my preferences yesterday concerning CPDN, that being the "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" - supposedly it will crunch faster... or so i am led to believe... something about it being able to report "trickles" every 144 timesteps and/or 1.39%

well, anyhow every project that i currently run will show up in Task Manager and the one that is actually running will be the one with all the CPU (100%)

it doesn't bother me that they are listed there, but i am concerned in that I did not reboot after upgrading, and with all these progs consuming swap space maybe it's one of the programs there throwing the dos prompt at me (or maybe it is something in 4.30)

your thoughts on the matter are greatly appreciated

(btw, in the 15 minutesd it has taken to post this i have not had it pop back up - BURP still suspended - will see if it happens again if i "un-suspend")

I have had mine running for a couple days now and I am still not sure what the graphs are trying to tell me. I have 5 days of data now and the graphs don't seem to be telling me much...

So, I guess I need to go look at the code and try to figure out what it is trying to do ...

It'll start working after you return work for each project, atleast it did for me. Somone said "you have to wait three days"

My BURP does that to, I tried closing it (the dos box) but it stops the work and gives Computation errors. This might better be reported to BURP. I haven't done so.
