I just started with Seti@home classic a couple days ago. Then noticed the web site said the are in proccess of switching over to the new BOINC software..

When I came to the BOINC web site, It tells you if you already have a classic account all you have to do is activate your new BOINC account.. When I click the link to activate then enter my email address I get a return message saying that no email address of mine was found. Check My seti account and sure enough it is listed there. Are you linked up with each other? Why can it not find my e-mail address?

I used the creat a new account link and did manage to get the software up and running.
Now what do I do with the Seti@home software? It is currently prccessing a data packet. Do I just let it go? what will happen to it?

Also, Although I have a cable connection to the internet I do not leave my computer running 24 hours a day. I do shut it down for a few hours... When I restart BOINC Unlike the SETI Classic that starts automatically where it left off. I have to get back on to retrieve the data packet. Why does it not do the same thing? And when I went to start it again and enter the URL and account key it said invalid account key. I had to be on the BOINC web site and go to where you get the URL and account Key to re-start it..

then I have it set up s it goes to the screen saver. I have not turned the screen saver to go blank after a certain amount of time. When the screen saver comes on, the graphics are on for about 1 second then the screen goes blank.

Seems to me this program is very buggy. And reading through a lot of these questions I am not the only one with problems.. I would think that you would have done extensive beta testing to resolve these problems before releasing it for public use..

One more question. Why do you or Seti@home not have a email address for users get get technical assistance?

hello and welcome Tim!

The data from classic are a snapshot taken at the 15. March 05, so your account was probably not on the list.
Why it's still possible to create an account over there is beyond my knowledge, but it should not be a problem afaik, as long as you keep the same email adress on both accounts. With the next snapshot after finally closing classic, it should be connected.

Have you already crunched any classic WUs?

And to all your other questions:
The (very good) manual for Boinc is the BOINC Powered Projects Documentation by Paul D. Buck and the FAQ therein.
A quick installation guide in this is here and for windows go here, for –ux go here afterwards.

Yes I have already cruched a couple WUs and it is presently working on another. Should I stop it where it is at? Then should I just un-install the seti@home software?

Classic is going to pass away in the next few months.
The new kid on the block is Boinc, which is going to replace it more sooner than later. And it's imho the better one, as you can join multiple projects in a well sorted and managed manner. So you will never run dry if one of the projects has some problems. And as they are all underfunded science projects, some part-time failure is unavoidable ;)
Whether you have to uninstall it, or simply run it dry, is up to you. But do not run both of them parallel, because they will suffer with the competition for the CPU.
