Hi to all Seti@Home community!

I and a friend of mine, with support of other members of Hardware Upgrade Seti group, have developed a program that allow SetiSpy to work again with Seti BOINC, called SPY++. Whe have updated SetiSpy too and make the 3.4.0 version that is compatible with BOINC data and correct some bug.

You can find more information about the project, history, instructions and download in the english article in our site boinc.altervista.org

In memory of Roelof, I hope that you enjoy SetiSpy again.

I've tried this since I loved the old SetiSpy. I can't get it to see the WU, even though I hvave set the path for the client to the slots/4 directory. It seems to be hard coded to look for the state.sah file in Spy++.

It also doesn't see my name. It comes up as unknown on the screen even though it gives all my stats and the team that I am in.

Hi, if I understan well, you set the path to spy++ for the slot 4, but this is not correct.

If you have the spy++ folder out the boinc folder, youst pass the boinc folder.

For example, if your boinc folder is in C:ProgramBOINC, start spy++ as follow:

spy++.exe /dir C:\Program\BOINC

If you put the spy++ folder into the boinc folder just start spy++ without any parameter and it find the slots wu automatically.

I've writed all in the article on my site HERE

Congratulations!

However, one small but very important remark. SETI Spy was released under the GPL. If you have used the original source code (and it looks like you have), you MUST release Spy++ too under the GPL. Which means that: (1) you have to release the source code (2) you're not allowed to change the license like you did. Don't make me unleash Eben Moglen and the FSF hounds after you! :)

Thanks Roberto!

About the licence: SetiSpy is released under GPL and I will provide to release the code of my updated version (3.4.0). I will insert it in the download section :)
Spy++ is the program that we develop and it's indipendent from SetiSpy, that we have decided to release it freeware. I will provide to insert the two different licence file in the compressed archive :P

Anyone have tested spy++? It works ok? Thell me something :P

Just re-read your instructions. It seems that the problems may be caused because I have multiple projects running on BOINC????

Yes, Spy++ work ok only if seti@home is running on the host.

Maybe in the future versions I can fix this problem.

Try to start spy++ only when seti is running and test if it's all ok :)

I think that the only way I could do that is to install BOINC 4.62 and suspend the other projects. I think I will have to wait until you have looked at it working with other projects on board. I hope you will keep us all posted on the boards on your progress. Good luck :-)

For testing purposes only...try the following:
1. Shutdown BOINC
2. Backup ENTIRE BOINC folder to another folder to save it
3. Restart BOINC
4. Detach all projects except SETI
5. Shutdown/restart BOINC (just for grins, but also to clean up memory)
6. Start Spy++
7. Let it run 10/15 min. and note results
8. Shutdown Spy++
9. Shutdown BOINC
10. Restore BOINC folder from backup
11. Restart BOINC
12. Report test results

Good luck (don't use these instructions if you're not confident they will work for you).

So Spy++ basically just sits between SetiSpy and Boinc's SETI@Home II to let SetiSpy work with the new release?

If it is entirely seperate from SetiSpy, then there's no obligation for you to release your code (although I would have to wonder why you wouldn't?)... but if you're linking with SetiSpy or using chunks of that code, I'd suggest reviewing things carefully, because there's a good chance you may need to license your project with a GPL-compatible license.

Spy++ is tested to work on the official 4.13 (but on 4.19 works great too :)
I'm not shure if it work on 4.5x/4.6x.

Now I explain the question! :D

SPY++ was developed from zero and not use any part of SetiSpy code and any other library. SPY++ is a totally indipendent project! ;)
