Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
* Answer to the first question: Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery? *

I like the theory, that we're not alone in the universe. Sure, there is life, there must be.

There are millions, billions of stars, there must be thousands of worlds like the earth. And may be some of these worlds have developed intelligent life forms.

But I don't think we'll ever see them, because we can't travel faster than light, but we would have to, to visit them. If mankind one day finds a way to travel faster than light and meet intelligent life, we'll probably shoot them, like we do with everything else. So mankind should better change its mind in general. Not everything from outside is a threat. That is the danger I see in such a discovery.

The possible benefits... who knows , they could help us find solutions for scientifical and social problems and we could try to do the same for them.

* Answer to the second question: Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send? *

A beacon, why not. And didn't we already? Didn't the NASA put a message on Voyager and all other devices they sent out to discover the universe?

* Answer to the third question: Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? Any suggestions? *

I run SETI @ home on my computer, because I want to help to find intelligent life out there, if there is.

The home users have made SETI the most powerful computer of the world, providing a power that makes the IBM supercomputers look like little calculators. Thats just great and I want to take part in it.

Thats why I switched from the graphical version to a commandline service shortly. A shame that I changed my mail and 'lost' my WU. ;)
