Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think extraterrestrial life exists. I think that humans will discover some simple form of life within the next century in some near planet, or even solar system. The main benefit of finding extraterrestrial life would be, quite utopically (if there is such a word) the gahtering of mankind into a better social organization, where strong countries will halt military expenditure in world domination projects, so that an effective and really democratic global organization will be possible.

I don't think the discovery of a far off extraterrestrial race will immediately bring inteligible comunication, mainly due to technological and physical limitations, but this will certainly give impulse to technological research so that viable communication is possible.

I don't really think that a beacon would make much difference in the process of finding another race, we are already living in a great electromagnetical transmitter.
