I believe that even if there is no other life out there, the search itself is worth the effort, for it creates a sense of wonder. Although as hard as it is to imagine infinity of space, it is equally hard to accept that there is no intelligent life out there. In the words of Douglas Adams:
"Infinity, bigger than the biggest thing ever and then some.
Much bigger than that in fact, really amazingly immense, a
totally stunning size, "wow, that's big", time. Infinity is
just so big that by comparison, bigness itself looks really
teensy. Gigantic multiplied by colossal multiplied by
staggeringly huge is the sort of concept we're trying to get
across here."
So by simple laws of statistics, we cannot be the only intelligent life that has developed in the entire hugeness of the universe.
