Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that extraterrestrial life must exist somewhere in the universe, but I'm not sure if it's close enough for us to ever reach or detect. If we did discover somebody out there, it seems unlikely that we would be able to reply in a timely manner given the distances involved!

Nonetheless, I think it's important that we keep looking, as discovery would help us understand more about how the universe works. This is why I run Seti@home. Sometimes it seems quite hopeless, but I'm confident we'll find something someday.

As for transmitting a beacon, I think that we are already transmitting all sorts of signals on every available frequency. Although "Three's Company" is perhaps not how we would want an alien race to get a first impression of earth, terrestrial television, radio, and satellite signals are constantly leaving the solar system on their way to other stars.
