Personal background
Sixty something guy who doesn't think we will find anything... But how would we know nothing is there unless we check?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As I said, we have to check everything we can to either find something, or proove there is nothing. To paraphrase Dr. Sagan, perhaps we are alone, or maybe we are the first. It doesn't seem likely, though, does it?

I think this project is a good idea, it will help us find our place in the universe, which is what a lot of people seem to desire.

However, communication by light would be very cumbersome, given the vast expanses of space and time involved. Messages from even "nearby" sources would take years, if not decades or even centuries to respond to, and receive any response.

But maybe we can learn something by just listening.
