Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Someone just might get the 'signal'. It could even be me!
Real 'working' signals that 'they' send to each other are probably as secretive as possible using four simple techniques:
1. Narrow beam, probably laser-type, to keep hidden in 3D. A focused beam is also a much more efficient use of energy for communication.
2. Extreme high frequency (probably high ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma ray) to allow maximum message density.
3. Extremely short bursts to keep hidden temporally.
4. Superbly encrypted to keep hidden as noise. Needs no explanation - privacy. We don't want anyone eaves dropping in on our conversations - I can't imagine that 'they' will either.
Between precisely pointed narrow beam, extreme high frequency, extremely short burst and unimaginably advanced encryption the likelihood of us ever detecting is infinitesimally small.
Good luck being able to detect, much less recognize and decrypt this type of signal. What would a few thousand years of advances in cryptography do for us? How could we decrypt something with tens of thousands of years of head start in encryption?
Of course, on the other hand it is possible that someone is broadcasting a dumbed down signal and message just for the likes of little old us. (Unless they are high-tech 'hunters and trappers') |
