Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do you run SETI@home? I came across an article on America Online, several years back, that described a new project with an acronym I was familiar with: SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence). The article described an effort underway by this group to use the public's spare and unused computer cycles to comb through data which SETI had collected overtime. This was one of the first mass distributed-computer networking projects released to the public, according to the article, and SETI wanted volunteers from the public. I was excited. Although my local family was intrigued, no one was as gung-ho to join as I was. I wanted to be a part of the effort--among the earliest to join, was my motive.

Since that day, the folder containing my SETI data has never been misplaced or forgotten. I've used three different, successively more-powerful personal computers to contribute results to the project, excluding the two my older and younger brothers own (who didn't like to leave my client data running all the time--like I wanted :D ), and I fully intend to contribute my results so long as I have such capabilities.

What are your views about the project? I do not have information, such as others may have. My experiences are incredibly limited, but I expect humanity will find that life exists elsewhere--not JUST on earth. The notion simply does not settle well with me: Humans being the only standard of sentience in the universe? My inclinations lean against the idea. Since humanity itself appeared without a reason, similar arguments must have brought life to other places around the galaxy and our universe.

Any suggestions? Be generous and helpful: Buy me unnecessarily-powerful computer components for the to-be-built computers of my future, and I'll use 'em to produce more results for the SETI@home project? ;D
