Personal background
Hello fellow SETI Members, I thought it about time I created a profile as I have just completed 1000 SETI hours in the search for ET.

I live in Devon, UK and am 56 years old. I have served in the Forces (Army) and worked for the British Government. I love my wife of 25 years, all animals and wildlife.

My hobbies are tropical fishkeeping, working on Answerway (an online question and answer site). I am a sort of Agony Uncle on this site, helping people with personal problems. I have many other hobbies including TV, Films, Music and Reading.

I have known of SETI for many years but it was not until I saw the film 'Conttact' inspired by the wonderful Carl Sagan that I decided to look into what I could do to help in the search for ET. After visiting SETI@Home I realised that this was right up my street, downloaded the program and hey presto, here I am.

Like I suspect all of the other members of SETI, I live in the hope of being the first to discover life in the Cosmos. Hopefully highly intelligent and able to teach us how the human race can live in love and harmony with each other.

I am absolutely convinced in my own mind that 'We are not alone' in the vastness of space and all it takes is a 'ginormous' piece of luck to prove that I am right in my conviction. I am somewhat sceptical but open minded about the reports of visitations and abductions by alian beings. I have seen nothing so far to convince me to change my mind about this.

So ET, if your are listenning, DON'T PHONE HOME, PHONE EARTH.

Good hunting to you all.

John
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My thoughts on the SETI Project are:

1) I am perfectly sure that intelligent life exists in other galaxies and I feel sure it may not be that far away from Mother Earth. I am equally convinced that a lot of this life is far more advanced than we mere humans and would not be surprised to learn that we have already been discovered and are being studied by them. If so I feel sure these beings are keeping a low profile and do not wish to make themselves known to us yet.

2) Yes I do believe that we should try to find other lifeforms and also we should let them know we are here. Although we are possibly running the risk of finding a race who are malevolent, I still feel that we should search for other lifeforms and also advertise our presence.

3) As I believe mathmatics is the universal language, I think some sort of message should be devised using this criteria. I am also impressed with the message sent out from earth several decades ago. I don't know how far this spacecraft has reached by now, but I believe our earliest radio and TV signals have just about reached Arcturus and for some reason I have always felt that this is the place where intelligent life would be found.

4) I run the SETI program because I believe that SETI find it extremely difficult to find funding and as I have a computer it is sensible to use this program to help decipher the myriad signals being gathered by this project thereby helping SETI to keep their costs down and the breaking down of the information being received will be achieved that much quicker. I only wish that every computer which uses the Internet would download and run this program.

5) The only suggestion I would make is not concerning the running of this program but I wish we were be able to change our passwords instead of having to use a string of numbers.
