Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI partly cause might as well have my machines do something when I'm not useing them to much, but mostly cause it'd be cool to hear from an E.T. I've not dug into the math or science to extensively, however giving the limited resources available I think this is the best chance we have of discovering something out there. I would hope someday they have the ability to widen the bandwidth and computers become powerful enough that they can maintain a short turnaround time yet wider and deeper analysis of space. Givin the distances involved and the space out there only a very very wide net will probably find anything if trolled long enough. Would even be cool if they could adjust the clients to not only look for signs of intelligence but also indicators that might help other branches of astronomy. Our emissiions have only gone close to 100 light years so we're still young ourselves.
