Personal background
I'm a UNIX Systems Administrator by trade for the last [mumble mumble] years. I enjoy computers and computing in general. I have managed clustered systems in several forms, so the idea of this massively distributed network of computers was interesting. Members of my staff raised the idea of working with the SETI project and the comradeship of it sounded like fun too.

I'm a certified Black Belt in Okinawan Kenpo karate. It keeps me from getting fat and helps me keep up with my kids too. I enjoy sports of all kinds - basketball, swimming, baseball, football, soccer, cycling and lawn games (horseshoes, jarts, etc).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm not sure if life exists beyond Earth.

We already send enough beacons that it probably sounds like a noisey hot spot in space. A repeating pattern makes the most sense, somehow constructed to be clearly not naturally occuring. What should it say? There's a huge question. Are we ready to present an invitation as a planet? Maybe and maybe not.

I've read several reasons that people have joined this project. Some are thoughtful, some are amusing and one thread is disturbing. The idea that religion discounts life on other worlds disappoints me. I have been a Christian longer than I have been working with computers. But I have no issue with the thought that there might be life elsewhere. The Bible does not mention life other than here but that is the not the focus of the texts. It would not disturb me one way or the other as far as my faith goes to see that there is life outside of Earth.

I started running SETI@home when some of my staff members invited me to do so. It sounded like something fun we could do together as a group and make useful time of the unused cycles on our systems. It's been interesting to watch the project grow and see the software develop and improve.
