Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm not sure if I believe extraterrestrial life exists, but I'd sure like for there to be some. Even though I've been signed up with Seti@home for years I suspect we won't discover extraterrestrial life until it comes over and beats us profusely about the head and shoulders. That seems to be the only way that we as a species seem to learn anything.

The possible benefits of such a discovery would be unimaginable. The dangers, I guess anywhere from alien bad breath to total annihilation of the human race.

I would think that, if we were to transmit a beacon it should be something simple to distinguish from background noise. Either a steady tone or a regular pulse. Things like sending prime numbers is great once you know someone's listening, but until then you just want your signal as noticeable as possible.
