I do think that extraterrestrial life exists. The odds that we are alone are just too small, IMHO. I hope, but do not expect, that I will live long enough to experience the discovery of ET.
I see little point in debating the dangers/benefits of discovering ET, as anything is possible here. Like any discovery, you can turn it into something nice or nasty. Therefore, I see no objection to transmit a beacon. If ET is out there (and has the technology), they will find us in due time anyway.
Finding ET (or them finding us...) is one thing. Getting into practical contact and communication is another. However, I think that we should pursue any possibility to find ET, to do justice to our own existance and nature.
