Profile: Dan Mancuso

Personal background
Currently, I am Retired(disabled) I was previously the Core Network Administrators for the Pueblo of Isleta (People of the little island) In New Mexico. I have also performed as the Network Administrator for the Grants Cibola County School District (also in NM) and installed networks since 1989.

I think I have always been interested in "what is out there" perhaps for as long as I can remember. I remember my Mom saying one night, "It'll be flying right over in a few minutes", and she dragged us outside, and we watched as one of the first US spacecraft flew right over our house! I was of course, hooked...

A few years and one or two disasters later, at the age of 11, I watched as we put Neil and Buzz on that almost planet we see most every day. To me, it was no longer just a hunk of cheese in the sky... it was a place where some of us were walking and sleeping...

Later, I figured if we could get that far (and we had the dreams to go much farther (I remember watching 2001: Space Odyssey) That with so many stars in the sky, someone else must have thought the same...

I always want to be a part of SETI since I heard of it, but did not have the equipment or proper connection to the internet... Since June of this year(2003), I now have more than I need... I run it 24 hours a day! (I have spare CPU power, even while working) and love the see the red, magenta, Blue and Cyan "slabs" popping up, just waiting for that "wow" signal to pop up on my monitor. (and although I have now switched over to BOINC... I can still watch the same when I want)

I have also been a member of the Planetary Society on and off since I think 1996 (I know my first card was signed by Carl Sagan).

I try to encourage folks to join in whenever I can.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I run SETI@home because I hope that someday we will be able to, at the very least, enjoy "their" versions of Lucy and Jack Benny. I would be happy if our "first contact" was the equal of our Old Time Radio, that I still enjoy listening to today.

2. I have always been optimistic about the project. This is something that even if some do not think is "all that important" the costs are minimal, and with people like me (Member of the Planetary Society) and hopefully you, help defray the cost willingly.

3. Only suggestion I may have is to make this project even more well known, since inception, more than 5 million people have "crunched" at least one work-unit. With BOINC, we are doing it differently (apparently, when I first wrote this, my ~3700 WU equal about 2750 credits for BOINC... No biggie... I'd sure like to see those old WU's added to our current total, but since the goal to find ET is the same, who cares about credits!... Let's find that elusive signal! I wanna listen to ET's Lucy!
