Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
The sheer numbers alone dictate life on other planets.
In fact, even the most pessimistic calculations leave the Universe teaming with life.
Unfortunately the microscopic sliver of time that we have existed (with intellingent communication) in this universe (less than 100 years out of billions) makes it very difficult to exists at the same "time" as another civilization. Many other civilizations may have already come and gone, and many others may easily be a million or a billion years beyond us. The odds of us finding another civilization near the same "level" as us would seem to be very remote.
And what would a civilization a million years ahead of us be like or think of us, and why would they care? As Star Trek IV demonstrated, intellegent life may have visited Earth a million years before humans even evolved and only found Dinosaurs. |
