Personal background
I've been SETI-ing for 4 years, since 2010, on and off. I'm very much a supporter of the rights of those who are gay, bisexual, transgender, what have you. I'm nonreligious, since everyone seems to have differing theories as to the greater meaning of this chaotic miracle of a universe, and since loads of them waste time squabbling about it instead of doing something useful, I just don't bother with any of that. I've resolved that the most infallible course of action is to help people in any way I can, a work ethic that hasn't failed me yet.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@Home because I think that a dialogue with an extraterrestrial species would spark a plethora of breakthroughs in numerous scientific fields- linguistics would benefit from learning the language of the ETs. Technology would be enhanced by the infusion of new perspective from the ETs, even if they aren't as technologically advanced as us. Politics would be especially affected, as everyone stops squabbling over bits of land and century old social faux pas's to gaze at the sky in astonishment. Further, I think that the United Nations would be granted more powers to create a united front, not 260 fractured pieces, that ETs could initiate a dialogue with.

I am a bit scared as to whether humanity is ready for such a huge discovery. Can we handle the possibility that these aliens may be as advanced as us, if not more so, and that we aren't alone? Will we all panic, or will we stare at the stars absently and then, with a shock, realize that someone may well be looking back?
