Personal background
I´m 42 (the ultimate answer to all questions ;-)) now and an ethusiastic fan of SF, especially STAR TREK.
I live near the geographical center of Germany and I am working for a company supporting systems for the automobile sector. My daily business there is to maintain and support several SAP R/3-systems together with my colleagues.
In my sparetime I play the bassguitar, my favorite style is straight rock music like ZZ TOP, Bryan Adams and so on. As a kind of 2nd hobby I´m using my computer for working on photos and music and using the web.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I´ve heard from the project several years ago, at this time I could not afford it to buy myself a desktop with an internet connection.
The years passed on and in spring of 2001 my current boss talked to me about SETI. He has founded a group named W_E_C_H and asked me to join this group with my CPU. Since then, I run SETI all the time an so my "package" no. 2000 I could gladly return on July 12 2002. ;-)
2. I surely believe that mankind is not the only species the universe has created. I run SETI because I want to bring in my little part for to find a hint to this.
3. In my opinion ext. intelligence does exist. Their shapes and bodys may be different to ours but that does not matter anyhow. Maybe some of them have reached a higher point of evolution, maybe some of them are still on the level mankind was 10.000 years ago. If they are similar to us, they might have developed a compatible technologie. In this case we should be able to pick up their signals. Benefits for us could be to see mankind from another point of view, not longer as the top of evolution. Dangers only could exist if they do own a much higher developed technologie but in this case I think they would have captured the earth much earlier. ( We are sending out signals for more than 50 years now, so it´s no use to start hiding now ! ). For the case that on other planets similar projects may exist, I sure support the idea of sending out our own "earth-characteristic" signals. As Mr. Spock would say: "Live long and prosper !".
