Personal background
I'm a 54 year-old father living in Lawrenceville, GA (as of today, 21 March, 2004). I work at the Coca-Cola Co. as demand forecast manager, responsible for non-carbonated product demand forecasts (Minute Maid Juice Drinks, Powerade, Nestea COOL, etc.) I have been married to
My hobbies are few: occasional tennis, music - jam bands and new, 'up-and-coming' groups vs. commercial bands, and reading (enjoy Tom Clancy works).
I was born in Chicago, IL, moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL, at 10yrs old through high school. Graduated from Georgia Tech (B.E.E. '72). Have worked around the Atlanta area since then.
My two children are attending the University of Georgia. My daughter in 6th year of pharmacy, beginning a year of rotations in Columbus Ga this summer. My son will graduate this May with degree in Computer Science, although his first priority is a rock-and-roll band, Second Shift, which he has been playing in for the past 4 or 5 years.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that it is significantly more likely that there is life elsewhere in the universe (vs. not). However, I also think that the 'creator' designed the system to work in such a manner that the distances between us (both in space and time) will prevent a meaningful conversation until we have evolved a bit more, or at least until we quit fighting with each other on this planet.
I think we should not send a beacon and use 'extra' resources' to solve other social problems on this planet first. Passive listening such as SETI is ok w/ me though. Steps such as the plaques and recording discs on the Voyagers are ok, too; I doubt anyone will find these items before the sun dies or a man-made or natural disaster befalls the planet.
I use SETI@home to make use of spare CPUs to help the project move forward, while I'm not using my Dell computer.
