Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that there is extraterrestrial life especially now that life has been found on earth in the most inhospitable places. Who would have predicted the life found around the geothermal vents on the sea floor.
We will probably find primitive life on Mars or on some of the moons in the outer solar system. I think that we will find evidence of intelligent life sooner rather than later but I don't expect ET to show up on the White Lawn.
We have been transmitting our location for as long as we have had radio so I don't think a beacon would do any harm.
I started running SETI@home in May of 1999 and with a few breaks I am still running it because it is fun.
SETI@home has not been a waste of time even if it never finds evidence of ET because it proved the concept of distributed computing over the internet. My son dropped out of SETI@home to join a group that is looking for a cure for cancer.
