Personal background
I grew up in Oak Harbor, Washinton, lived in Alaska for a while, and joined the USMC in 1993. Since I have been in the USMC, I have lived in Hawaii, Okinawa, and California, and visited quite a few other areas.
I married a great woman I met in Alaska in 1998, and we are both suffering the California life style while I still play in the USMC.
Currently, I love working on computers. That is what I do in the USMC, and that is what I do at home as well. I am not great, but I can usually figure out the problems fast and solve them fairly quickly. The only thing that throws me for a loop sometimes are the viruses and worms that attack my systems from time to time.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
In reqards to your first question, I really don't think that my mental powers have grown beyond barely understanding what is going on around me now; so, how can I be expected to answer such a question. Perhaps SETI should hire a seer, you might be able to find some answers then. But, that is a lot of faith SETI would have on that individual to answer such profound questions.
I don't believe that it would be a bad idea, if we haven't done so already, to put out a beacon advertising our existance and capabilities. But imagine this, we certainly would be placing ourselves in an akward position since we currently don't have the capability to answer back. Also imagine if the other race were to place a "house call", we would certainly hope it was a friendly race then. I really don't think we are ready for any "outside" influence. Too many people would feel threatened and probably react in a manner that wouldn't facilitate a good relationship. We can't even get along on our own world.
I think it is important to discover new areas, thoughts and concepts. Without this, we wouldn't grow as a society. If I can help us understand what we don't know, I will do what ever part I can, however small, to support this. To do anything otherwise, I would be a person that had no desire to grow myself. Since I only have a vague concept of what and how this project works, I can only say that SETI is a great concept and operates very well. Anything anyone can do to support your project, they should. There is absolutely nothing I could say or do to improve your project as it stands right now. Perhaps we will design a computer that can handle more, or a satelite that can provide more coverage in the future. But until then, I think SETI is doing an outstanding job. And even more so, the support SETI gets from SETI@home users and donators is great. I don't think anyone could expect any more understanding our current capability.
