Profile: Tim Holmes

Personal background
I am 50 years old and living in sunny Tallahassee, FL. I was born in the UK and moved to Toronto, Canada when I was 3 years old. I have been in the USA since 1988 and am now a citizen.

I am Director of Quality Assurance (Document Management Products) at Hummingbird, Inc. In past lives, I've been a programmer, data center manager, trainer, technical writer and other computer and network related things. My initial career was Accounting but I stopped counting beans as soon as I got my degree.

I have 2 sons (10 & 20) and between them and keeping daily life going, it gets real busy.

Hobbies include: Gardening, reading, reading, reading, travel and futzing around with computers.

I was originally a Mac guy but given the real world of making a living I am now PC--but not necessarily Politically Correct.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There is no doubt in my mind that there HAS TO BE someone out there.

The immensity of the universe first became real to me when I saw the "map" of the known universe in a National Geographic Atlas when I was in my early 20's. Looking at that expanding picture still blows my mind and it is still one of my favorite maps to look at. (I'm also a map freak).

I started running SETI@Home as soon as I heard about it. Not only do I think that looking for some sign of the others out there is a very worthwhile endeavor, but also the idea of such a large co-operative effort around the world is really cool.
I try to get as many of my friends and colleagues as I can to run the software.

My hope is that when we finally meet one of the other intelligences that share our universe, we will find that they have the same intellectual curiosity and openness that I believe we should display.
