Personal background
My name is Rudi, I currently live in Cape Town, South Africa and I've been participating on and off in the SETI@home project since about 1998, (under another username of course). I'm a keen unix/linux geek, and will hopefully
get a high paid job as a BOFH. My former login's progress was looking good (about 150 units processed) until my e-mail address changed, so i had to start all over again. but i'm not too worried, as nowadays, i complete on average 21 units per day. not bad for a pleb with a bunch of dumb terminals chugging away all day.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I firmly believe that there is extraterrestrial life out there somewhere, i've seen it on StarTrek(tm) and Star Wars(tm) ;P

But SERIOUSLY though, it's been said before, but i'm going to say it again... there is a gawd-awful lot of space out there, and if there isnt other intelligent life out there, then it's a friggin huge waste of big empty space.

2. Should we send a beacon? hmmm that's an interesting one. I'd have to say yes, because right now, on some froody planet out there in the galaxy, there are probably an almighty huge number of geeky aliens parking off in front of their PC's sampling for radio signals from outer space, looking for signs of extra-froodular life. why should we be the only ones who get to listen to the groovy tracks from alien life forms. Send them some U2 or Smashing Pumpkins :)
