Profile: Jaco Van Niekerk

Personal background
I'm a 32-year old programmer from South-Africa. I started programming when I was about 10 years old and since then I've spent hours everyday coding. My first computer was a ZX Spectrum and computers have indeed come very far since those old 8-bit, 48K machines. The way forward is parallel processing - mass parallel processing, with millions of participating computers over a gigantic network. The Internet is one big computer - and we are not using it to its full potential!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I am a scientist and by running SETI I assist other scientists in their work. Also, wasted CPU cycle are like a light bulb left on.

2. "Absence of proof is not proof of absence." Although I believe we are alone in the cosmos, it is not enough reason not to contribute. A group of scientist was probably at a party one day, drinking beer and smoking (something) and made a hypothesis based on an observation: "Hey dude! Look at those stars... space is huge! Maybe their are other dudes out there? We need to listen...". So here I am, aiding in testing that hypothesis. I do not think that we are capable of understanding space in its entirely - pretty much in the same way that a dog can not be made to understand quantum mechanics. To understand the universe would be to climb inside the mind of God. However, there's nothing wrong with trying and indeed, we should!

3. Yes, please bring back the old screen saver! Also, please provide more feedback on the cool stuff that you do find.
