Personal background
I work as a System Administrator and as I have spare processor time I found it a good use to let it run SETI applications. I can think of no better use to put extra CPU cycles than the pursuit of a scientific application, SETI being on the top of the list.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely think there is a 100% chance of sentient life existing elsewhere in the universe, but the constraints of physics and technology available (along with the timing of a civilization's lifespan) may never allow us to discover another populated planet. We can always remain hopeful however, which is why SETI is up and running! A beacon would be an excellent ides to let -other- civilizations become aware of our existence, but would do nothing without providing them the technology to contact us in return in a "timely" basis. Since such technology doesn't currently exist, a beacon would serve humanity little purpose, but remains a neat idea.
