Personal background
I believe in E.T. life, but I don't know anything about those gaussians, fourier things in SETI@home. So what? (well actually I learned about fourier transformations, but that was a long time ago :) ) I'm in IT as a security and lan/wan specialist, and I met so many wasted computing power that I decided to get SETI. So my primary goal is not to find aliens, rather than not to waste that computing power we already have.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I can't imagine that we're alone. That doesn't mean that meeting a green-slimy thing wouldn't scare the sh.. out of me :) Anyway I can imagine a world, where we're not the only ones. But will it be happier then? Not necessarily. The Next Big Step for mankind should come from us not from some alien technology... Something else: there are rumours that government already met aliens, why not use SETI's computing power to find out first whether it is true or not? One more thing: I think it would be a nice idea to stop watching the sky for an hour and let SETI's computing power crash Echelon, I think it's a good idea, so why don't you folks at SETI post some voting form on seti@home homepage about this?
