Personal background
I'm from Wigan originally, but I now live in Huddersfield.
I work as an artist although I haven't been in paid employment for a while. I am involved with a charity which enables people who are ensconced in the mental health system to tap creative potential in (visual) art.
I receive disability benefits for being crippled by the strange mental states I experience. It's treated as bipolar disorder (manic depression). It also gives me enhanced abilities sometimes, but it's pretty impossible to control.
My other interests are ideology, comics, conservation, dancing, role-playing games, music, and world cultures (although I tend to be nervous of travelling abroad).
I'm ready to believe aliens are watching us, but I don't have a very structured knowledge of science, and am as skeptical of materialism as I am of everything, but I'm quite excited about the local Huddersfield blossoming of the Interfaith project, as I think aliens would tolerate us better if we tolerated each other more. I'm wondering whether I'll be any the wiser about whether to follow a particular religion, and which one. I've tried most of the "major" ones now.
I think more recognition of religious fusion might be a prerequisite of a true global culture, and I think it is certainly possible to combine religion with atheism.
Hopefully being involved with all these nice Muslims and Christians and Hindus and Sikhs and Quakers etc. will be less likely to lead me into trouble with the law than my involvement with political activism per se.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think if aliens are trying to get in touch, it would be good if we were listening, so we could at least try and decide whether to pick up.
I love the Carpenters, and their song "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" makes me feel happy.
The film Contact is good as well, but I think because the human race can be quite quarrelsome within itself, it would be hard for us to decide what to say to the aliens, and whether to invite them round.
