I think the odds are in favour of there being extra terrestial intelligence. However, the difficulties in locating and verifying it are immense.
If discovered, extra terrestial intelligence would probably be the most significant single event in human history. Unfortunately I fear the psychological response to such a discovery - I suspect mass hysteria might break out.
If we do discover intelligent life elsewhere we may never directly communicate - how do you exchange messages with a 100, 1,000, or 10,000 year time lag? Even if we do communicate we may never meet - the light speed barrier may prove insurmountable.
So many questions - I just hope some of the answers are forthcoming in my lifetime.
