Profile: WiccaBear

Personal background
I am 65, living in Miami, Florida. I recently retired from a governmental agency having oversight responsibilities for building code enforcement throughout Broward County. I served on a number of building code writing committees, locally, state-wide and internationally, and am actively involved in designing educational programs for these codes.

For a second job, I am the senior graphics designer and consultant for Wolf Moon Webs (http://WolfMoonWebs.com) The love of my life is my partner in this company.

In my "other life," I am High Priest of Wolf Moon Coven, a traditional Wiccan Coven in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area.

My hobbies include gardening, writing and painting (oil and water color), reading and photography. I also teach a wide range of classes (technical ones at the local colleges and universities) and even more interesting ones at local New Age venues. I teach classes in Herbalism, use of the Norse Runes, Tarot, and Wicca.

Other than that, I really don't have much to do.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Given the size of the universe, and the likelihood of other solar systems containing planets that could support our own kind of life, I think it is inevitable that there must be intelligent life "out there." But, then, I still haven't given up hope on finding it here!

Seriously, I think just knowing that we are not alone will have a profound effect, mostly for the better, on our own lives. Actual contact should be able to benefit all parties involved. Frankly, any "dangers" that might arise from such contact will probably be more mental than physical. While I enjoy the sci-fi movies about interstellar conflict as much as anyone, I just don't see this as a realistic problem.

Hopefully, even we will not be able to transport our own uniquely genocidal tendencies outside of our own planet. Perhaps the knowledge that there are non-human beings will help us recognize that we are far more alike than we are different.

And yes, I think a beacon would be a wonderful idea. We should send information about our planet, our art and our music. And maybe we should warn any potential visitors about our race's unfortunate tendency to "shoot first and ask questions later." Maybe send them a copy of "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

I run SETI@home because I think the more of us who help, the sooner we may actually find something. I think this is a super project, and that any effort to discover the truth is worthwhile.
