Profile: Gareth D. MacLeod

Personal background
Basically, I am a self-inflated Canadian teenage nerd who is suprisingly good-looking, considering his current social status. At current, I am still a student in high school, but I work on and off in journalism related to the Electronic Entertainment Industry. I'm also incredibly opinionated in every field, and my tendancy to judge people is outdone only by my tendancy to be right in my judgements.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life exists simply because the chances of it not existing are incomprehensable. In billions of galaxies, each with millions of stars, there has to be at least one other planet (or whatever) which has even rudimentary forms of life on it-its common sense!

I think we should transmit a beacon for other lifeforms to find. I mean, it would be a whole lot easier for them to find us than for us to find them! With regards to whether extraterrestrials might be hostile, there is absolutely no reason to think that, and every reason to think the opposite. If they survived their nuclear age, it means they found some way to work with eachother for the good of their species-and that means they possess human qualities such as compassion and empathy. Therefor, I find no reason to believe they would bypass those instincts simply to harm another race of intelligent beings (or relatively intelligent).

I run seti@home because I think its a really cool idea that my computer is processing data gathered at the Arecibo radio telescope., but also because its really all I can do at this point to help the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
