Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I started running SETI@Home as the result of a "computing" match between some of my friends at Bradley University. We lived in the dorms, and thus didn't pay any extra for additional electricity used by more computers in our rooms. It was then that we realized how warm we could keep our rooms using only computers.

Since then, many of us have moved off campus and now have to pay for additional electricity used, so have toned down a lot of that abundance. One of my friends, however, lives in an apartment which uses electric heat for the whole building. So instead of using the built-in electric heater, he has been using any computers he can get his hands on running seti to provide heat this winter. We are currently working on a project involving a disk-less SETI "farm" made up of a bunch of older Sun Ultra5/10/Blade100 computers, which are controlled via a Thermostat plugged into the Farm manager via a serial port. This will eliminate the need to manually turn on and off all the machines he has running SETI.

I now also administer a computer lab on campus for the MIS department. So what do you do when you have a bunch of powerful machines at your mercy that are just sitting idle most of the time? You install BOINC on all of them!

I have also become rather interested in Nvidia's Cuda and it's capabilities, and have SETI for Cuda running on as many Nvidia cards as I can get my hands on (Four 8600 GTS's in the lab, and one GTX 470 of my own). You can see a more detailed list of most of the computer's I have running BOINC/SETI above in the "Personal background" section.
