Personal background
23/M from Denver CO. I enjoy music, books, movies, computers (duh), and a whole host of other pass-times. I currently work part time and am seeking new full time employment; something in the IT sector would be nice. I have been to college for one degree which I do not use and plan to return or another degree in the future. My favorite color is red, my favorite movie is Pretty in Pink, and my favorite type of aggregate is 3/4-.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Simple answers to the questions listed:

I think it is possible and even likely that other life exists elsewhere in the universe, though I'm not sure what the odds are that it has developed elsewher ewithin our galaxy. I'm not sure if humans will discover extraterrestrial life for a long time, given that it may be billions of light-years away from if, if it exists. It may be more likely that extraterrestrial life will 'discover' us, given our current astro-explorational budget conditions. I'd rather not go into possible benefits and dangers - that is the realm in which the ruling class is comprised of Aasimovs and Heinleins and Herberts.

Should we transmit a beacon? I thought we already did - is Voyager still puttering along? Should we transmit another one? I'd say let's wait and see if SETI gives us any good information as to which direction might be most fruitful for such a beacon.

I run SETI@home because I think it's an interesting use of computing power. I believe firmly in distributed computing and the things it mkes possible. I wanted to be a part of the group that collectively does the most CPU work in the world. I also wanted to have my computers doing something when I'm not using them directly, even though I do use them (or they are working on something) enough of the time to justify leaving them on 24/7.

Suggestions: Perhaps a simpler way to monitor WU progress on a console Linux machine? I can't seem to get what's available to function correctly.
