Profile: Darrel McClanahan

Personal background
I live in Oklahoma City. I was born while Pearl Harbor was under attack, and I actually remember the birth event--all the details including the first light I ever saw, red filtered light to the right of my face. Then there was the pressure, with serious consternation on my part, followed by the bright light and cold. I know that the right side of my face was down when I emerged and my first encounter with the pull of gravity. I also remember when those mumbling figures first snapped into sharp focus and I thought something like, 'Oh, so that's what they really look like!' Then, I learned to look in the direction of sound to check out the source, and I remember many other things after that.

I'm the oldest of six. I was raised on and around oil drilling rigs and earned college money by roughnecking. I earned a biology degree with chemistry and art minors. I spent 15 years with the Okla. City Water Resources Dept., 10 as chemist/biologist and 5 in management, the last 4 being over all the water treatment facilities, lakes, etc. After a serious case of burnout (15 yrs. without a week off), I left and returned to the petroleum industry as a landman and I'm currently finishing my 27th year. This is much more enjoyable.

As for hobbies, there are hiking, backpacking, skiing, rockclimbing, etc., photography (over 200 awards), radio controlled model aircraft, cosmology and landscaping around our home. I'll quit now because you probably stopped reading way back up there anyway.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I signed on because it seemed like a way to be a small part of something very important. There is certain to be life throughout the universe. I'd like to help find it. (I just wish we would appreciate and protect life on our own planet somewhat better.) This is a long-term project. It may proceed for decades or centuries before we have results. In the meantime, we should likely determine that there's life on a less communicative level to be found virtually everywhere we look.

As for suggestions, just keep up the good work and improve the scope wherever possible.
