Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Every so often, the 'limits' of science and our knowledge shifts, from thinking the Earth was flat we went to a round world, we believed ourselves to be the center of the universe, later we said we were wrong. So, I will say that I think it possible, even probable that sentient life exists, apart from the human race and Earth. How and when, I do not know. The main benefit that I can see from first contact would be learning a great deal about ourselves as well as whomever we encounter. Of course, the inherent risk is that, our neighbors might not be so friendly. AS to whether we should send a beacon, I'm honestly not sure, I mean, it would extend our range quite a bit. At the same time, if there are other people out there, they might not want our junk in their back yard. Honestly, I downloaded and am running SETI@home because I was bored, and curious. Besides which, my help however small, speeds up the process, that much faster. I think the project is a good idea, it gets everyday people involved, at least to some extent.
