Profile: Mark Valenti

Personal background
I live in Wyandotte, MI and work as a Software Engineer at Visteon. I've been using SETI@Home since May of 1999 on a single computer (can't get it to work through the firewall at work).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
This is the pursuit of a lifetime, although I'm 99.999% sure it will never come to fruition in my lifetime.

Although it's a start, I don't think we'll find ET "around the watering hole" either. I think when it happens it will happen in a completely random set of events that has us looking at some trivial data that beforehand would have seemed insignificant, thus making all of of us SETI@Homers look like we were wasting our time.

As for us sending out a beacon ourselves, I vote we wait until we have the beginnings of an interstellar navy going and settle our quibbles here on Earth before potentially taking on a race that would make us look like the Detroit Lions going up against the St. Louis Rams. I don't think it's a likelyhood that any race we find will ba able to wipe us out in any easy fashion, or even have those intentions to begin with, but we are dealing with our existence here. It may be a good thing to be prepared for the worst. I'd rather join Starfleet than the Rebel Alliance.
