Profile: Dany J. Hilven

Personal background
I'm Flemish (Belgian), °1953, married to Britt and father of Nadja (°1978) and David (°1981).

I am rejoining the SETI community: after changing laptops for a couple of times, I lost attention and data...

This is what I wrote back in 2001...

What should I say ?
Obviously I have always been pretty much preoccupied with anything going on around us/me. Surely aviation is a big area of interest (I have my own PPL), but so is space (and un-/manned spaceflight), so is philosophy, so is history... well, let's say I'ld like to keep an as broad (and unprejudiced) as possible view on man's origin/evolution/future (sorry for my English !).
Now that we have an ADSL-Internet connection at home, it is possible to keep my laptop (Dell Latitude 800) on line for a much longer period of time and thus, I hope, contributing more and better to your project (which I think is just fabulous).
Of course somewhere in the back of my mind the hope of 'stumbling' on to some thrilling signal from anywhere in the universe is surely present, but I'ld wish it to happen to anyone, as long as it happens some day. I am convinced that we are not alone in this vast, huge space/time. So, let us hope we'll notice and understand any signal coming from another civilized race.
Keep up the good work - I'll try to help as much as I can.
The laptop now is a Siemens Fujitsu C-series Lifebook (running a bit faster...)
Best regards - Dany
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do I run SETI@home?
Well, also see above...

My views about the project?
It's obvious nowadays to most of intelligent women/men that we are not the only (intelligent) life in the universe, so if there's even the slightest chance of getting contact via this project, I believe we must use it.
Personally I think it is very much possible that there have already been probings from ET's in the past (when ? Millions of years ago ? Thousands ? Perhaps still going on ?).
When we'll discover it ? Perhaps we already have, without recognizing it.
If this is so, then I don't really see any danger in a possible contact.
If it is still to come, let's hope they really are civilized and don't resemble the human race too much...

Suggestions: keep lobbying and spreading the word!
